Do Earth Day Every Day

Vacation is a time to let go and let the natural mountain beauty be your guide. But even during your glorious White Oak Lodge and Resort vacation, you can keep your carbon footprint smaller with a little commitment.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, we’ve compiled these reminders for how you can make every day Earth Day, even while you’re having fun.

Plastic Bottles
You know it, I know it: They’re terrible for the environment (but they’re just so darn convenient sometimes). Bring your own water bottle with you and fill it at water fountains and everywhere else you can. If you don’t like the taste of the tap, put it in the fridge for a few hours or add ice. I also put a carabiner clip on my water bottle so I can hook it to my bag/s.

If You Fly…
Did you know you can actually choose a more fuel efficient aircraft? Travel plans don’t always allow for such a choice, but if you have the ability, choose a Boeing 777, 787 or Airbus 345. The Boeing 787 aircraft is the best option since its fuel consumption will be 20%-30% percent less than other similarly sized air crafts.

Use Your Condo for Good (Cooking)
Eat local. Find a farmer’s market or street stall and bring home fresh food you can enjoy in your condo kitchen (try the Gatlinburg Farmer’s Market). The food is more than likely locally grown and sourced, and you get to support the local community.

Be a Hiking Hero
Going for a hike or bike ride with a picnic lunch? Old-style picnic baskets with reusable cups, tableware, plates and cloth napkins are not only green, but add a touch of class to your outing. Instead of lots of cans and bottles of soda, make a jar of sun tea to share. Bring a large trash bag and pick up not only your own trash, but any trash you might see on trail.

Wildlife: Look But Don’t Touch
When you’re out on the trails, it is not uncommon to see the local wildlife, like fox, bears and elk (sometimes they even come up to your cabin or condo if they think there’s food, so make sure your trash is always disposed of properly). Respect their habitat and leave them alone. Don’t feed them, don’t taunt them, and don’t try to take a selfie with them!

Gatlinburg loves Earth Day – enough to celebrate for a whole week. Check out Earth Week activities from April 18-24.

Remember, your White Oak Lodge and Resort vacation is only possible because Mother Earth offers us beautiful places like the Great Smoky Mountains. Take care of her while you enjoy your trip.

What eco-friendly practices do you engage in? Tell us about ways you help the environment in the comments below.
